Jennifer Beck for Victoria

Jennifer Beck has been selected to represent the Labour Party in next May's election in Victoria ward.

David Norman OBE is standing down and Jennifer will be a great replacement. Jennifer's hard work, honesty and integrity has been recognised by Victoria ward Labour members, and I trust and hope that she will be amply rewarded at the polls come the first Thursday in May.

More Tory spin on the NHS, but it will fool no-one

Local Conservatives claims on the NHS are risible. It is a Conservative Government that is forcing deep cuts into essential services. Of course, local Tory candidates are worried because residents can see that their cherished hospital is in crisis.

The maintenance of A&E in Southend-on-Sea is not down to Conservative campaigning - they have largely ignored and argued against those of us who have campaigned. It is down to people like me who have used whatever platforms we have to highlight the real issues with our National Health Service.

The Conservatives have little chance of success in Victoria ward. They last won Victoria in 2000, under the old boundaries. They have not won the ward in its current configuration.

In 2016 the Conservative candidate attracted 15.35 of the vote, as opposed to 54.7% for Labour. However, we should not allow complacency to creep in. Make sure you vote for Margaret Borton on May 3rd (or before if you have a postal vote).

An electoral joke? Oh Clare!

I know Clare Fletcher, I like her. But she has damaged her credibility as a political aspirant with this leaflet, which recently hit my doormat (in Victoria ward).

Try as they might, the Green Party in Southend has yet to win a seat, or even come close. The Green record in Victoria is not that great, as this table shows.

When Labour won in 2016 they got 55% of the vote, some 49% ahead of the Green Party. This highlights just how ridiculous Clare claims are on this leaflet.

Clare asserts that “only local Green Party campaigner Clare Fletcher can beat Labour at this local election”. This preposterous claim is not backed up by any evidence.

This leaflet is so silly that I am now wondering whether this is an ill-timed April Fool’s joke.
